I grew up on a farm in Cornwall before heading up north to Leeds Medical School to gain my medical and surgery degrees with an extra year of Psychology on the side. I stayed in Yorkshire for a few years but headed to the coast. (I'm never happier than when I'm near water,) doing various jobs including Paediatrics before realising that I am a generalist at heart and love getting to know the whole family and treating everyone and every condition in combination. Since then I have done various jobs on my way to becoming a GP and have now been working at Albany Surgery for about 16 years.

In this time I have seen many changes, with staff, patients, building and computer systems and have continued to enjoy working with our Albany team and the wonderful rest of the NHS in the best interests of our patients. I like getting to know the person behind the illness. I also love education - working as a GP trainer, medical student mentor and research and education lead. I love inspiring our medical students and work experience students at the beginning of their journey and seeing our trainees at the end of their journey, becoming independent and confident GP's.

I started working part-time when my family were young and this has slowly changed to working full-time hours. This makes balancing work and home-life more of a juggle but is worth it. I have managed to persuade my family they love beach trips, camping, swimming, cycling and generally just being outdoors. I love my garden for a bit of green mindfulness time and the river near where I live for a refreshing swim all year round. I am never happier than if I have sand in my toes and a sea-bird's view of the water. This is my down-time and washes away the stresses of the day.

I grew up in Buckinghamshire and went off to St Georges Medical School in Tooting in London where I completed my medical degree with an extra year spent studying sociology. I then completed my first junior doctor jobs in Chichester West Sussex and Basingstoke before heading off to New Zealand for a year to work and travel. On return I realised my heart was in general practice and I completed my GP training in Gloucestershire whilst living in Cheltenham. During my training I discovered that I enjoyed getting to know my patients and their families and how important consultation skills and communication are as a GP.
I moved down to Devon in 2003 and have worked mainly in Plymouth since both as a locum GP and as a salaried GP. We made this move as we thought it would be a great place to raise children which turned out to be right-my children are now 21 and 18 and are flying the nest to pursue their own lives. I love living in Devon and have 2 crazy spaniels who need a lot of exercise and we are so lucky to have so many walks and beaches nearby.
I moved to Albany Surgery in early March 2025 to experience a different surgery and area and to develop my interest in women's health particularly HRT, menopause and contraception although I enjoy all aspects of general practice. I also have a keen interest in our next generation of doctors (they'll be looking after me one day!) and teach professionalism at Plymouth medical school and am also a mentor for new to practice GPs. I also believe preserving and optimising the wellbeing of our GPs is paramount in getting patients the care they need and addressing inequalities and I am involved in GP appraisal which allows me to further this aim.
Outside of work I enjoy travel and dance-these days its "silver swans" ballet! Also spending time with my adult children and friends plus of course entertaining my dogs!

Training practice

Here at Albany we are a medical training practice and you may be offered an appointment with a GP Registrar. These doctors are fully qualified and have had considerable experience in several hospital specialties but work with us to complete their specialist training to become a GP.

We also teach students and sometimes you may be asked to see the doctor or nurse with a student present. You will always be asked beforehand if this is acceptable and you may ask for the student to withdraw if you prefer to have your consultation in private.

Our involvement with medical education is important and we are very enthusiastic about it because it helps to keep the clinical team up to date with the latest evidenced based treatments. Also helps us to attract some of the very best people to work in our community.

We have 3 of our GP partners that take a lead on training, being; Dr Thomas, Dr Glenton and Dr Smout.

GP net earnings

The average pay for GPs working in Albany Surgery in the last financial year ended 31 March 2024 was £58,812 before tax and National Insurance. This was for 1 full time GP and 7 part time GPs who worked in the practice for more than six months.
