Practice Survey 2013/14

Patient Participation Group Report 2013/14 (.doc)

March 2012 - June 2013

During the last twelve months a small group of patients has been working with the practice to develop activities beyond simply a virtual group, that would be consulted once or twice a year about surveys, to an interactive group which would engage with the practice in an exchange of information and practical assistance to the benefit of all patients and staff. It was recognised that such a group could be of real help at a time of considerable change for the practice as well as changes in the organisation of the Health Service.

The opportunity to extend activity was initiated by the local LINk (now Healthwatch) representative in March 2012 and the small group of patients from Albany, who came together at the first Teignbridge meeting, have met with her on a number of occasions. She has also worked with Dr Glenton to develop an active Patient Participation Group. It has been an exciting time and there is still lots to learn on both sides. What is real progress is that we now have a small core group who meet every six weeks to two months, a larger group who meet each quarter, and the original virtual group, who now number over sixty people, is continuing to grow. We are keen to draw in as wide a range of patients as possible, and particularly would like younger members of the practice and representatives of the ethnic communities in the town to be involved. It is important that everyone feels they can be involved in discussion of healthcare issues which affect all patients. However, as we have said before, the Participation Group is not a medium for complaints, the practice has a quite separate procedure for that.

With all the changes that are happening in the NHS, local committees have been set up where patient representatives from many practices in Teignbridge meet to discuss and monitor the new systems which are being put in place. Mike Joyce, Chair of the practice core group, is now also the Chair of the Forum of Patient Participation Groups representing South Devon and Torbay. From this group representation is made to the new Clinical Commissioning Group which has replaced the old Primary Care Trust. The CCG control the budget that now buys the services provided to patients throughout South Devon and Torbay. It is a two way system for communication which is still developing. If you have something that you would like to raise, please do feel able to contact Mike, his details are available on the website.

The group will be working with the practice to try to ensure that patients’ suggestions and needs are taken fully into consideration in the move to the new site, and will be assisting in practical ways too as this happens. The building is now well on its way and the core group has been invited to visit the site at a suitable time in the near future.

We shall look forward to keeping in touch with you as the time of the move approaches.
