Common Childhood Illnesses and How to Treat Them

The HANDi Paediatric app gives up to date advice about common childhood illnesses, and may be able to help you if your child is unwell.

NHS organisations in Devon have developed the app alongside Paediatric consultants, and gives access to home care plans, as well as GP and hospital clinical guidelines for the most common childhood health conditions such as:

  • Diarrhoea and vomiting
  • “Chesty baby” illnesses such as Bronchiolitis, Asthma and Croup
  • “Chesty child” illnesses such as wheezing and Asthma
  • High temperature
  • Abdominal pain
  • Common newborn problems

The app gives information about when and how to ask for help, along with what to expect when your child is being assessed, and gives new parents more confidence in dealing with minor conditions at home.

You will be asked to answer a series of questions about the symptoms your child is having. The app will then suggest the best course of action; whether that is to treat your child at home, make an appointment with your GP, or head to A&E.

The app can be downloaded here:

The following short YouTube videos tell the stories of parents and carers of children who have used the HANDi app, and explain it in their own words:
